KARACHI, March 8: Feudal system, age-old traditions and unjust laws have hampered women’s development in society. To bring a sustainable change, awareness is the key. Women need to know their rights before waging a struggle for them. Also, they should realise that there is no concept of independence without economic emancipation.

These observations were made by Naib City Nazim Nasreen Jalil while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar on women’s empowerment. The seminar, held at the R.L.A.K Government College of Home Economics on Wednesday, was organised in collaboration with the Junior Chamber International Pakistan in connection with the International Women’s Day.

Addressing a large gathering of students and teachers, Ms Jalil said that economic empowerment was crucial as it not only increased self-esteem but also raised the respect of the individual in the eyes of other people. Appreciating government’s efforts for the uplift of women, she said that the increase in women’s seats in assemblies and union councils would go a long way to address women’s issues. However, she said, consistent efforts were needed to uproot the evils sown by feudal system and unjust laws.

On behalf of the city government, she promised to extend all support to the college in any educational venture. Director Board of First Microfinance Bank, Akram Khatoon, who has been in the banking sector for 41 years, said women were receiving very little in terms of education and health services.—Our Reporter
