QUETTA, March 6: The Human Rights Society of Pakistan (HRSP) on Tuesday said that the Balochistan government had failed to curb terrorism and crimes.

A statement issued here said that the chairman of the Balochistan chapter of the HRSP, Saleem Ansari, presented the HRSP 2006 report on Balochistan to the executive committee.

The HRSP expressed concern over the rise in crimes, kidnapping for ransom, street crimes and disappearance of citizens. It said that government departments also failed to provide proper information to families of the missing people.

The report said that had the government granted autonomy to the federating units, according to the Constitution, the country would not have been in the present state of mistrust and political wrangling between the government and political parties.

The report expressed dissatisfaction over the conditions in prisons and stated that during a visit to Quetta jail it was found that 33 foreigners, who had completed their sentences, were still languishing in the prison.

However, the report expressed satisfaction over the performance of the judiciary.
