KARACHI, March 6: Judicial Magistrate East, Ganhwar Khan Gadehi, on Tuesday remanded a suspect belonging to a banned sectarian organization, Sipah-i-Mohammad Pakistan, to police custody till March 10.

Syed Hammad Riaz Naqvi alias Zia, son of Riaz Naqvi, who was wanted to police for his alleged involvement in several high profile killings and sectarian attacks, was arrested by the Crime Investigation Department.

According to the CID, the accused was arrested on a tip off after an encounter in Aswan Town of Malir on March 4 while his three accomplices identified as Syed Mohammad Askari, Rauf and Qalbe Abbas escaped.

Police claimed to have found a bag in Naqvi’s possession containing two hand grenades, a Kalashnikov, a pistol, and ammunition. He is also said to be a member of an inter-provincial gang of the banned outfit and had carried out several attacks in Punjab and Sindh since 2001.

Police said the accused was involved in the killings of Maulana Azam Tariq in Islamabad, Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai in Karachi, Mufti Mohammad Jameel, Nazeer Taunsvi in an attack in New Town, Mufti Attiqur Rehman, his son Ammar and Maulana Irshadul Haq in Preedy area.

Police said the accused was needed to be investigated thoroughly and requested for his remand till March 19, but the court fixed March 10 for the next hearing.

JUDGE POSTED: The federal government on Tuesday posted District and Sessions Judge Hassan Feroze as presiding officer of the Banking Court-III, Karachi, for three years.
