HYDERABAD, Feb 19: Hyderabad DIG (operations) Commander (retd) Shaukat Shah has said that the police are clueless about missing persons in the region and added that he will ensure registration of FIRs on behalf of relatives of missing persons.

He was talking to journalists at the Hyderabad Press Club on Monday.

"I will make sure that FIRs about missing persons are registered if complainants turn up at police stations," said the DIG when he was told that the prime minister’s directives about registration of cases of those people who had mysteriously disappeared were not being complied with.

He refused to offer comment when asked whether the missing persons were being detained and grilled by intelligence agencies, saying that it was beyond the authority of the police.

He said that new districts created in defunct Hyderabad division lacked logistic facilities and faced shortage of police force. He said that resources of pre-division Hyderabad had to be distributed among new districts and recruitment for the districts had not begun yet.

Mr Shah said that investigation in Greesh Kumar murder case was going on, the final charge sheet would be submitted soon in the relevant court and it would establish whether the accused belonged to a proscribed militant outfit or not.

He rejected a report that the family of the deceased had paid Rs1.2 million to the police to ensure proper investigation and disagreed with a press report that Rs220 million were found at the place from where the body of the victim was recovered.

The DIG said that final identity of the deceased would be established after DNA test report but the deceased's family had identified him through his trousers.
