KARACHI, Feb 14: Five-year-old bay horse Jack In The Box who was allowed to run on merit obliged punters when he powered his way to land the feature event as Jawan Bakht bite dust in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Wednesday.

After two consecutive dismal runs he outpaced Killer Instincts to post four lengths victory. Jawab Bakht finished third while Foolish Pleasure settled for fourth place.

Saddled by S. Ehtisham he was ridden home by jockey Ghulam Shabbir II in one min six seconds.

The victory also earned the rider-trainer combination a splendid double following the success of four-year-old bay filly Little Girl in the second race.

The favourite filly registered a facile five lengths victory over mare Meri Paidagiree.

Rider Mohammad Essa shone in the saddle when he presented owner Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara with a winner by piloting public fancy Al Jarrar to one-and-a-half lengths victory over Lucky Girl.

This was Al Jarrar’s first win of the year after three successive failures.

The punters were at the receiving end as the remaining four races turned out to be upsets.

The days’ proceedings began when 11-year-old chestnut mare Taneez created quite a stir by claiming the opener. She beat Tom Cruise by two-and-a-half lengths.

Riding boy Fateh Mohammad registered his first win of the year when he galloped outsider Power Plus to one-three-quarter-of-a-length victory over filly Breaking News.

Chestnut Field Commander pulled off the third upset beating Shah Pasand while mare Sweet Grandy toppled Khas-ul-Khas.

The next Gymkhana race meeting will be held on Sunday.
