PESHAWAR, Feb 5: Several lecturers of the Peshawar Public School and College have opposed the grant of three-year extension in service to the institution’s principal, according to sources.

A notification issued on Nov 7, 2006, by the secretary of the NWFP department of schools and literacy stated that Jamil Khan had been appointed principal of the school on the contract basis for three years with effect from the date of his retirement on Jan 17, 2007, on the recommendation of the institution’s board of governors.

The sources claimed that the decision was in violation of an order issued by the provincial establishment department on Jan 30, 2001, stating that no extension in service or re-employment beyond the age of 60 years should be allowed to any government servant except in cases of the chairman and members of the NWFP Public Service Commission, the vice-chancellors of the universities, the chairmen and members of tribunals and the chairman of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, for whom the retirement age was 65 years.

They said a letter singed by 13 lecturers of the college had been sent to NWFP Chief Secretary Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi, expressing concern over the extension.

The lecturers said the principal had held the post for the past 22 years and the institution’s academic performance had deteriorated during the period.They alleged that the principal had been found involved in irregularities in inquiries twice.

They requested the chief secretary to order an inquiry against the principal and order freezing of college’s accounts.
