Call to fight against tyranny

ISLAMABAD, Jan 29: Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto has said the supreme sacrifice offered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (May Allah be pleased with him) teaches us that tyranny, oppression and falsehood must be resisted no matter how heavy are the odds.

In her message on Youm-i-Ashur, she said Imam Hussain sacrificed his own life and the lives of his dearest family members and faithful followers on this day for the cause of truth and justice and to resist oppression and tyranny.

“As we pay homage to the great martyrs of Karbala and reflect on the lessons of their supreme sacrifice today, we must also look inwardly and do soul searching. Today the need for learning a lesson from the martyrdom of Imam Hussain is even greater because tyranny and oppression continue to stark the land in different forms and different manifestations.

“On this day I urge my countrymen to rise above sectarianism, forge unity among their ranks and dissociate themselves from all those elements who, driven by frenzy, are fanning sectarianism and anarchy. The need for harmony and tolerance has never been as great as it is today.”

NAWAZ: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in his message said the basic lesson from the tragedy of Karbala for all humanity is that the struggle for principles and values is supreme and far superior to the unprincipled quest for power.

The PML-N Quaid said the philosophy of Hazrat Imam Hussain was to not yield on principles come what may and to offer the greatest sacrifice for this noble cause.

He said nations and peoples could not evolve and civilisation could not be refined without adherence to this philosophy.

He said the people of Pakistan must realise that it was only they who could save their country and society from ruin. “I will stand shoulder to shoulder with my people in this struggle,” he added.
