KARACHI, Jan 25: A major technical fault in the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation grid station at Gharo caused a water shortfall of 42 million gallons on Thursday. An official in the KWSB said power to the grid station shut down at 2:10 am and was restored at 3:45 am. This affected the working of pumping stations at Pipri and Dhabeji. Many areas of Karachi and other localities in the jurisdiction of the water station remained deprived of water supply.

Another official said overload on the system caused the power failure.

A KWSB spokesman, when contacted, said Dhabeji pumping station, the main station, was affected for a short while. Water supply was restored through power generators. He said work on the power transformer would be completed by Friday afternoon.

The spokesman said water supply to some areas may have been affected due to low pressure.

The KESC spokesman said a flash caused faults in the transformer, and the staff would complete repairs within 48 hours.
