Asim wins in Pakistan Open

KARACHI, Jan 17: Third seed Asim Shafik of Islamabad moved into the next round when he convincingly beat Mubashir Afridi in straight sets in the men’s singles of Pakistan Open tennis championship which commenced at the CDGK Sports Complex on Wednesday.

He conceded three points in registering 6-2, 6-1 victory over his opponent in the opener.

Two other players who also advanced with him were Yasir Khan and M. Shafiq (Sahiwal). Yasir struggled to beat Gul Hameed after the latter retired in third set. The scores were 3-6, 7-5, 3-1 (retd). Shafiq also got tough time from Rizwan Shamsi before winning the battle 6-2, 7-6.

Men’s singles: (qualifying round)

Salman Ahmed bt Adnan Yousuf 7-6, 4-6, 7-6; Sheikh Adeel bt Asim Khan 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.
