PESHAWAR, Jan 17: The Khyber Medical College Teachers Association has urged the government to notify the establishment of the Khyber Medical University in order to make it operational.

The association, which met here on Wednesday with Dr Zahid Hussain Khalil in the chair, thanked NWFP Governor Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai for giving assent to the bill passed by the provincial assembly on Nov 24.

The teachers said upgrading of the Khyber Medical College to the university level would promote medical education in the province.

They appreciated members of the provincial assembly for supporting establishment of the Khyber Medical University.

Then prime minister had announced to upgrade the college to the university level in October 1989 and the University Grants Commission had recommended its upgradation on Nov 29, 1998.

The teachers’ association said this would also regulate medical education and streamline the examination system.

It said the National Education Policy (1998-2008) had recommended establishing three medical universities in the country and subsequently, the Liaqat Medical College, Jamshoro, and the Dow Medical College, Karachi, were upgraded to the university level. The medical university in the NWFP is yet to be made operational.
