HYDERABAD, Dec 30: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has stressed the need for community participation in efforts to improve sanitary situation of the city and held out an assurance that the district government will provide assistance to the civil society organisations in this regard.

He asked the union council nazims, naib nazims and councillors to coordinate with the organizations to resolve the problems of the people.

He was speaking to nazims, naib nazims and councillors of Latifabad taluka and the district council members of the taluka on Saturday. Latifabad Taluka Nazim Sabir Hussain Kaimkhani, Naib Nazim Shujauddin Shaikh, MPA Aslam Pervez and TMO Abdul Majeed Rajput were present.

Mr Jamil said that it was impossible to produce hundred per cent results in any matter without active participation of the people.

He urged the union council nazims to encourage civil society organisations to improve sanitary situation of their areas.

He said that the district government would provide facilities and assistance to the organizations in this regard.

He said that under the local government system, a councillor had to play a pivotal role and unless a councillor was effective, transfer of powers at grass root level was meaningless.

He said that nazims, naib nazims and councillors of each taluka should sit together and evolve a comprehensive strategy to improve sanitation and solve other problems of the people. Mr Jamil made it clear that without team work, the problems could not be solved.

He said that each union council had 13 elected representatives and if they were to cooperate with each other, no problem could remain unsolved.

WATER: In its daily report, the district government on Saturday claimed that contamination-free water was being

supplied to the people and quality of water was being tested every four-hour by water technologist of National Centre of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry, University of Sindh, Dr Ahsan Siddiqui.

A statement issued by the district nazim secretariat said that today (Saturday) only 50 cusecs of water had been released from Manchhar Lake into River Indus against the release of 1,012 cusecs from Sukkur Barrage.

EMERGENCY CENTRES: The Water and Sanitation Agency announced on Saturday that it had established central control room in the office of its managing director at the Civic Centre and emergency centres on the premises of divisional offices, which would remain open from 10am to 10pm during Eidul Azha holidays on January 1 and 2.
