Published December 28, 2006

MULTAN, Dec 27: The government will launch a scheme enabling people to deposit their utility bills through postmen, State Minister for Communications Engineer Muhammad Shahid Jamil Qureshi said on Wednesday.

He said this while addressing a ceremony to distribute 40 motorcycles among the employees at the office of the deputy post master general.

Mr Qureshi said the facility would be available to all the citizens at their doorstep and post office would charge Rs10 per bill as service charges.

He said 150 motorcycles would also be distributed among the post office employees next year. He said all postmen would get motorcycles to improve the service. “We want to make service better than private courier services,” he said.

He said that post offices would be modernised and staff would be trained.

Later, addressing a press conference, Mr Qureshi said that post office would soon introduce a housing scheme for employees. He said no daily wage employee would be removed from job and matters regarding their wages would be solved as per the policy. He said that daily wage employees would be regularised with the expansion of the post office network.

He said closed circuit cameras would be installed at post offices in big cities. He also disclosed that security men would also be recruited to offer security cover during cash handling at post offices. — APP
