Australia to rush out stamps

Published December 20, 2006

SYDNEY, Dec 19: Australia Post and Cricket Australia announced plans to rush out stamps commemorating victory in the Ashes series Tuesday, less than 24 hours after Ricky Ponting's side reclaimed the urn from England.

Australia Post said its staff were “working furiously” to ensure the stamps bearing images of Australia's win would be ready by mid-January.

“We expect that the demand for these cricket stamps will be massive,” Australia Post's head of philatelic sales Noel Leahy said.

“This summer has captured the imagination of the nation, and Australia Post is delighted to be celebrating this series victory in such a unique way so soon after the event.”

One of the stamps will feature an image taken during play and the other will show the victorious Australians celebrating regaining the Ashes by winning the Perth Test to take an unassailable 3-0 series lead.—AFP
