PESHAWAR, Dec 19: The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) has reiterated that it will not boycott the next general elections even if they are held under General Pervez Musharraf.

Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, JUI general secretary Maulana Amjad Khan said that the party would not stay away from the democratic process and it would continue its struggle for strengthening democratic institutions in the country.

Replying to a question on the issue of resignations from the National Assembly, he said that instead of resigning, the JUI-F had decided to stay in parliament to challenge what he called the unconstitutional steps of the government.

He admitted that there were differences in the MMA over the issue of resignations and added that they would be resolved in the next meeting of the supreme council of the religious alliance.

He said the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal would launch a protest movement against the government on January 22, by taking out a procession in Rahim Yar Khan.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Qazi Hussain Ahmad and other MMA leaders will lead the rally.

He said that the alliance would hold a public meeting in Karachi on Dec 31.

Replying to a question about the Women Protection Act, he said the MMA would not challenge the act in the Supreme Court and added that the top court should take a suo motu notice in this regard.
