ISLAMABAD, Dec 17: Shafiuddin Ashraf (Karachi) and Dr Imran Farooq (Quetta) were elected chairman and secretary-general respectively of the All Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation (Apnec) for the year 2006-08.

According to a statement issued by the election committee chairperson Fozia Shahid here on Sunday, 31 candidates participated in the polls and delegates from all over the country cost their votes at the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club.

Shafiuddin Ashraf got 21 votes against Nasir Mehmood Chishti (Jang Rawalpindi) who could get 16 votes. Dr Imran Farooq got 19 votes.

Other office-bearers who were declared successful are: Anwer Raza, senior vice-chairman; Tariq Usmani and Haji Ibrahim vice- chairmen; Shakeel Yamin Kanga, Ziaul Qamar, Sameen Khan and Makhdoom Ahmed Bilal assistant secretary-generals and Javed Asghar Chaudhry, treasurer.

The newly-elected members of the executive committee are: Dilshad Khan, M. Shahid Chaudhry, S.M. Tahir Qayyum, Amir Raza Khan, Maqsood Ali, Qaiser Chohan, Mohammad Munir, M. Aqeel, Malik Tahir Ahmed, Farhat Turrabi, Ansar Abbas and Nasir Hussain.

Fozia Shahid, Laiq Shaukat and Zafar Rashid Bhatti conducted the elections.— A Reporter
