LAHORE, Dec 12: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) is trying to form a grand alliance to dislodge the military dictatorship in the country, claims Qazi Husain Ahmad on Tuesday.

Talking to reporters after a meeting of the central executive committee of the Jamaat-i-Islami, he said a mass movement was the only way to liberate the country from Gen Pervez Musharraf and the US interests.

He said the MMA, in spite of small differences, would remain intact and other parties would also be invited to cooperate with the alliance on the basis of ideology, culture and religion.

Gen Musharraf was attacking the ideology of the country and he would not, and should not, be allowed to do so, he said, and that the MMA, along with other parties, would fight and win this battle.

Mr Ahmed said the JI’s central executive committee was discussing the matter of resignation from the National Assembly but the supreme council of the alliance would take the final decision. Anyhow, JI’s members of the National Assembly would boycott all proceedings of the National Assembly, he said.

Gen Musharraf had abandoned the Kashmir cause, which he was not mandated to do and would be resisted by all means, he said, adding the MMA was in touch with Nawaz Sharif and other leaders of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy and was trying to evolve an anti-Musharraf consensus.

Separately, the Punjab chapter of the Jamaat-i-Islami passed a resolution that law and order had worsened and even courts were not safe in the country.

The party said street crime had risen like never before and kidnapping for ransom was order of the day. The government, in spite of having full control of police, administration, judiciary and parliament had failed to improve law and order in the country.
