Gender indiscrimination!

SIALKOT, Dec 10: Several Computerised National Identity Cards issued in the recent past suggest that Nadra is concerned about issuing the cards and not the information they contain.

Many are the instances in which the authority has issued the CNICs bearing wrong names, addresses and even gender, according to applicants.

Mumtaz Bibi, who hails from Daska, said the card Nadra issued to her carried wrong gender. She said she visited the Nadra Swift Registration Centre for the rectification of the mistake but she was not entertained and made a rolling stone.

In Sialkot city, one Allah Rakha said he was a resident of Sialkot’s far-off village but Nadra officials had shown him as the resident of the city proper. Expressing concern over the situation, people from various walks of life have criticised Nadra for its “poor service”. The officials don’t pay heed to the public complaints. “We have lodged several complaints to Nadra higher-ups in Islamabad and Lahore, but to no avail.

Some people from rural areas describe the experience of getting the CNIC as agonising as, they say, they have to cover a long distance to reach the Nadra offices in the city. They also lashed out at the Nadra’s mobile van units for failing to come up to the expectation of the people.

When contacted, Nadra officials said they were making all-out efforts to redress the grievances of the public and there was no question of denying correction of mistakes.
