Published December 11, 2006

KARACHI, Dec 10: The Society For Preservation and Restoration of Vision, an NGO engaged in restoring sight of poor and helpless villagers all over Pakistan, has removed opaque eye lenses and inserted 3,795 crystal clear man-made lenses in their places, in five eye camps to restore sight instantly.

The operations were done in five different towns in the Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh; in Makamo, Usta-Mohammad, Rahimyarkhan, Mianwali, Pak Pattan and Samasatta, by a team of surgeons, comprising Dr Butt, Dr Faiz, Dr Zubair, led by Dr Asif, the senior ophthalmologist who has been performing these delicate operation for decades. Dr Abdun Nabi conducted the outdoor patient examinations in every camp.

Such camps are a four-five day undertaking as the patients may not get expert attention in the district hospitals.

Glasses and drops for improving sight and medication for a fortnight are given free in the OPD. In the OPDs in five camps, 18,770 patients were treated.

The operated patients are given drops for 40 days, the time needed for complete healing of the operated area and the repair of tissue, said a spokesman of the society.
