‘Don’t compare me to Rooney’

DOHA, Dec 2: China's Ma Xiaoxu, the Asian woman player of the year and youth player of the year, has precocious skills and raw strength that has seen fans compare her to Wayne Rooney.

But it is not something China's top female footballer is happy to hear.

“I know lots of people would like to compare me to Rooney. I do not like the comparison,” she told Chinese media here, where she is playing at the Asian Games.

“I know I have a strong personality, but I'm not as explosive as Rooney.”Ma believes she'll do a better job than Rooney at her World Cup debut next year in China. The Manchester United and England striker was sent off in his team's 2006 World Cup quarter-final defeat to Portugal.

“At next year's World Cup in China, I believe as a debutant I will play better than him. I also believe China will get better results than England,” she said.—AFP
