Karo-kari: four women killed

Published November 30, 2006

SUKKUR, Nov 29: Four women of a family have been killed in what has been described as ‘karo-kari’ murders in the Abdoo village under the Chak police station of the Shikarpur district.

Reports reaching here said that a group of armed men barged into the house of Mohammad Ayub Mahar on Tuesday night and opened fire, killing his three daughters, Naseem, Shahzadi and Nasiba, and daughter-in-law Safia. Manthar Mahar and Gul Bahar Mahar suffered bullet injuries.

The gunmen left the place firing in the air.

Mohammed Ayub told newsmen that a month ago Safia’s father Shafi Mohammed Mahar had alleged that his women were having illicit affairs with other men and said that he wanted to kill them because they were ‘karis’. Ayub Mahar accused Shafi Mohammed of killing the women. No case was registered till the filling of this report.

Honour-related killings are rampant, particularly in Sindh, and claim the lives of at least 250 people — most of them women every year — according to HR bodies reports.
