KARACHI, Nov 18: At least three vehicles were damaged on Saturday when a girder fell on them from an under-construction bridge near Teen Hatti traffic intersection on Lyari Expressway.

The ‘support girder’ was being laid by engineers of the construction firm on a portion of the Lyari Expressway when it accidentally fell down on the traffic underneath the bridge, and damaged two cars and a motorcycle. Luckily no one suffered injuries in the incident.

The contracting firm had failed to inform the officials concerned, and traffic flow continued on Sharea Pakistan when the incident occurred.

After the incident, traffic flow remained suspended for several hours, and vehicles going towards Liaquatabad were diverted to adjoining roads by the police.

Later, the road was opened for traffic.

Witnesses said that installation work was not completed properly, and the girder was in the process of being placed on the roof of the bridge when it fell down.

Soon after the incident, one side of the road was closed for vehicular traffic and the staff of the contracting company removed the damaged vehicles as well as the girder with the help of cranes.

A similar incident had occurred last month, but the contracting company did not take any precautionary measures to avert such incidents.

The Nazims of both Liaquatabad and Jamshed towns when contacted said they had no information about the incident.
