NEW DELHI, Nov 12: The United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has warned India about the possibility of Al Qaeda attacks on its airports and vital installations, a news report said on Sunday.

The report follows comments in New Delhi by US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher on Friday that every country was at risk from Al Qaeda.

"We have seen it in Southeast Asia, we have certainly seen it in Afghanistan and Pakistan border areas, and I suppose we have to assume and understand that their intention is to operate globally against those who are determined to stop terrorism. Every country is at risk, and we all need to be determined to stop terrorism if we are going to rid the world of this," Mr Boucher had said.

Press Trust of India (PTI), which carried the FBI report, said separately that the US think-tank, the Srategic Foresight Inc, known as Stratfor, has warned of serious consequences for the fragile India-Pakistan ties should there be another attack in India that leads to a heavy toll.

As the foreign secretaries of the two countries prepare to meet here on Tuesday to discuss terrorism and Kashmir, reports have also indicated an upgrading of security for the family members of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Official sources told PTI that the US security agency has warned its Indian counterparts of possible attacks on airports and vital installations across the country by Al Qaeda terrorists.

Security was beefed up at all airports across the country, especially those in Chennai and other southern cities following the discovery of the letter at Tiruchirapalli airport last week. It spoke of 10 Al Qaeda militants as having slipped in to launch the terror attacks.
