PESHAWAR, Nov 5: Efforts for preserving and promoting the Hindko language are praiseworthy but need more coordination to optimise results.

This was stated by Dr Syed Amjad Hussain, a Peshawar-born writer now living in Ohio, here on Sunday. He was addressing a literary function organised by the Gandhara Officers Club, a subsidiary of the literary, cultural and social welfare organisation Gandhara Hindko Board.

Highlighting the Hindko language’s historical heritage, he praised the board’s work on self-help basis that was supposed to be done by the government-run departments. He said that the organisation should be helped.

He said that the GOC had been formed to network with the Hindko intelligentsia for identifying the hurdles in way of preservation and promotion of Hindko and find out the solutions.

The organisation’s chairman Dr Zahoor Ahmad Awan, vice-chairman Dr Adnan Gul, secretary Mohammad Ziauddin briefly described the organisation’s work.

“All languages must be given due respect and proper attention. We are working to promote the Hindko language … to compensate for the apathy shown to this language in the past,” he said.

In the end, a Hindko singer, Saeed Paras, entertained the audience with his rendition of the Hindko mystic poet Sain Ahmad Ali’s verses.
