KARACHI: Efforts to re-float barge

Published October 29, 2006

KARACHI, Oct 28: The operation to re-float the capsized oil barge, Orion-I, began on Saturday morning after Eid vacation.

According to its owner, the weather had improved a lot and high tides subsided. Apparently there could be no obstacle to re-floating the vessel which would then be tugged away to the port area for detailed inspection to ascertain the cause of the disaster and to make it sea worthy again, the owner said.

Orion -I, one of about two dozen oil barges operating in the port area privately, ran aground in the first week of this month in a sudden sea swell.

It was carrying 72 tons of heavy fuel oil at the time of the incident but any oil spill was averted.—APP
