KARACHI, Oct 17: A World Bank mission visited Sindh from October 4-16 to hold discussions with the Government of Sindh on its education sector reform programme.

This was a follow up mission, which had been fielded to review the progress on certain key components of the Sindh's education sector reform programme, which is to be supported by the bank through its series of development policy credits on the pattern of the Punjab's education reform programme.

Sindh Chief Secretary Fazlur Rahman chaired the wrap-up meeting attended by Government of Sindh's team including the ACS (Dev), secretaries of finance, education, implementation and general administration and the officers of the Reform Support Unit.

The World Bank mission was led by WB Country Director M. John Wall. The mission appreciated the reform efforts taken so far by the Sindh government and it acknowledged that there was an increasing commitment at all levels and the education department and the RSU had been able to exhibit visible progress on multiple agreed interventions especially in the areas of policy formulation, improving service delivery in distribution of free textbooks and girls stipend and also in developing system monitoring and evaluation.

Sindh chief secretary informed the WB mission that the government was fully committed to the set of reforms which had been agreed and despite difficulties the government was well on its way to address issues of governance including recruitment of teachers and postings of EDOs on merit.—PPI
