Conjunctivitis breaks out in Badin

Published October 10, 2006

BADIN, Oct 9: The viral conjunctivitis, a contagious eye disease which causes inflammation, itching and swelling in eyes leading to photo phobia (inability to open eyes), discharge of tears and pus has reached alarming levels in the district with hundreds of patients reporting daily at public and private hospitals.

A chemist who had a shop in a locality said that he had sold 10 dozen eye ointments in just three hours.

Dr Abdul Salam says that the disease lasts for three to six days and advises people to take precautions to avoid infection, which spreads through contact, including use of towels and handkerchiefs of the patient and handshaking.

The disease surfaces in five to 15 days after such contact, he adds.

VILLAGERS PROTEST: The residents of Mohammad Moosa Arain village marched 15 kilometres, all the way from their village to Matli taluka, in protest against the district administration for its failure to drain out rainwater from their area.

Led by Jan Mohammad Arain, Mohammad Moosa Arian and Achar Arian the villagers started their protest march on Friday morning.

Raising slogans against the district government they reached the taluka where they observed a sit-in outside the local press club.

They complained to reporters that their village was still inundated in rainwater, which had accumulated after rains, and the district had made no arrangements to drain it out.
