PESHAWAR, Sept 30: Three people have died of cholera and dozens hospitalised in Tank district.

Sources in the health department confirmed that in the Gomal Union Council dozens of people have been hospitalised, while so far two women and a man had died of cholera.

Those who died of the disease were Ajab Khan, daughter of Haibat Khan and wife of Chiragh Din.

When contacted on phone, Gomal Union Council nazim Haji Iftikhar said that the disease might have been the result of open sale of unhygienic food in the market which most of the people purchase in the rush hours before Iftar.

The nazim said that they have approached the local health officials, but so for not a single team has visited the area to ascertain causes and the level of the epidemic.

Meanwhile, cholera continued to affected the Afghan population in the Kund Refugee Camp in Jehangira, and reports said that dozens more had been hospitalised.

Health experts believe that consumption of contaminated food was the main reason of the out break.

So far 6 deaths had been confirmed in the camp.

Those who died of cholera were: wife of Zahir; wife of Shinwari; daughter of Gula Jan; daughter of Akbar Jan; and two children.

Many people living in the camp had been shifted to the district hospital in Nowshera, Al-Mujahid hospital and some were under treatment in community health centres.

When the office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees was contacted for comments, its spokesperson said that they were investigating and after ascertaining the causes of the disease it would be shared with the media.
