Killers of taxi driver hanged

FAISALABAD, Sept 7: Two killers of a taxi driver were hanged here on Thursday in the district jail. Bilal and Imran of Chak 264 GB, Samundri, had hired a taxi some six years ago. They killed driver Abdul Jabbar of Chak 485 GB and drove away with the taxi.

An anti-terrorism court handed down death sentence to them on October 16, 2001. The supreme and high courts also upheld the death penalty.

Their families filed a mercy petition before the president which was also rejected.

CASE REGISTERED: The People’s Colony police registered cases against 50 motorcycle rickshaw drivers as they staged a protest demonstration in violation of Section 144 of CrPc.

Traffic police Inspector Shahid Rasheed filed written application with the People’s Colony police that Mushtaq, Salim Posti, Maulvi Khalid, Ashraf, Ghulam Haider, Hanif and others took out a rally in Abdullahpur on Aug 24. They raised slogans against the government.

Rickshaw driver Tasnim said they had been demanding that the government should not launch any drive to remove motorcycle rickshaws from the city roads.

A police officer, requesting anonymity, said on the directions from “high-ups” raids would be conducted to arrest “wrongdoers”.
