BAHAWALPUR, Aug 31: The ground-breaking ceremony of Rs10.25 million building of the Bahawalpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) was held near Karachi bypass here on Thursday.

District Nazim Tariq Cheema, who unveiled the plaque, expressed the hope that with the construction of its own building, the BCCI would be able to effectively promote industrial and commercial activities in this area.

He observed that new investors should come forward to set up industrial units here to help eliminate unemployment and backwardness in Bahawalpur.

Mr Cheema assured the BCCI of more financial grant of over Rs5 million from the Punjab government. He said that chamber’s members should also donate generously to meet expenditures of the building construction.

Uplift activities, he said, were being geared up here adding that the chief minister had approved the extension of dualised Baghdad Road up to the Baghdad campus of Islamia University while work on dualising of Ahmedpur Road costing about Rs110 million would be taken in hand shortly.

Earlier, BCCI president Mehboob Nasir Chowdhry in his welcome address said that Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi had provided Rs7.5 million for the project while chamber member Masood Nasir donated a two kanal piece of land.

He said the building would be completed within a year while more funds were required for the purpose.
