PESHAWAR, Aug 21: The city police have arrested a retired army major and seized a large quantity of illicit arms and ammunition from his vehicle on Kohat Road, said a press release issued here on Monday.

Acting on information about an attempt to smuggle arms attempt from tribal area police started strict checking of vehicles coming from the semi-autonomous Dara Adamkhel region on Sunday night.

Police signalled a double-cabin van bearing registration number FDZ-6669 near the overhead bridge on Kohat Road. During the check of secret cavities of the vehicle, police found three 44-bore rifles, three G-3 rifles, one Kalashnikov, three 30-bore pistols, one 38-bore pistol, 24 magazines of Kalashnikov, three magazines of G-3 rifle and 17,000 cartridges of different calibre weapons.

Dost Mohammad, a resident of Parachinar town of Kurram Agency, was arrested on the charge of arms smuggling.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused confessed that he was a retired army major and was attempting to smuggle the arms to different districts of Punjab.

Meanwhile, an old man was arrested on charges of smuggling 7kgs of fine quality opium and 3.6kgs of hashish to Punjab on Sunday evening.

Local police during a routine checking of passengers’ vans coming from Dara Adamkhel alienated Misri Khan, a resident of Badhber and recovered drugs from him.
