HYDERABAD, Aug 21: Speakers at a meeting held to mark the 26th death anniversary of communist leader Nazeer Abbasi on Sunday urged all democratic and leftist parties to get united on one platform and launch a joint struggle for the restoration of genuine democracy in the country.

They expressed fear in their speeches at the anniversary organized by the Inqalabi Jamhoori Workers Committee at the local press club that the democratic revolution would remain a mere dream unless all the democratic forces got united on one platform.

Late Abbasi was a true Marxist who had firm belief in communism. His selfless services for the working class and peasants could never be forgotten, they said.

Comrade Jam Saqi paid tributes to late Abbasi and said that he (Jam) had joined Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) with belief the party could herald a democratic revolution in the country as it was the largest political party which had the power to bring tens of thousands of people on the roads.

He said that law-enforcement agencies were killing innocent people like Rasool Bux Brohi and Liaquat Gabol but the rulers instead of administering justice were trying to protect the killers.

Mr Saqi lauded the role of media in bringing to light such flagrant violations of human rights. Many nationalist workers had disappeared but only the media had taken up their cause at the international level, he added.

Comrade Azhar Jatoi, president of Sindh Hari Committee, reiterated the call for uniting on one platform for the restoration of democracy and said that late Abbasi was not the name of an individual, nor a party, the name had become an institution.

Ramzan Memon, leader of Bhandar Hari Sangat, showered praise on late Abbasi who he said launched a relentless struggle for the rights of workers and peasants.
