Jaffar to lead against Oman

LAHORE, Aug 15: Goalkeeper Jaffar Khan will lead the 22-member Pakistan team against Oman in the 14th Asian Cup football qualifiers (Group-C) at the Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad on Wednesday.

It will be the third match between the two countries.

Pakistan were beaten 3-1 in the first match played between them at the Asian Games in Seoul in 1986.

The other match ended in a goalless draw.

Mohammad Essa, who has been appointed captain of the Pakistan under-23 team in the 10th South Asian Games, was named as Jaffar’s deputy.

Thirteen players who had been selected for the first AFC Challenge Cup were retained in the squad while seven players – Zubair Moazzam, Abbas Ali, Javed Hamza, Asif Ayub, Zeeshan Aslam, Naveed Khan and Imran Hussain — failed to get a place.

Meanwhile, Oman has announced a 39-member team for the match.
