ISLAMABAD, Aug 11: Excellent bilateral relations exist between Pakistan and Japan which must be strengthened further for mutual benefit of both countries.

These views were expressed during a meeting between Japanese Ambassador Seiji Kojma and Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Maj (retired) Tahir Iqbal here on Friday.

The ambassador, who called on the minister in his office, stated that the Japanese government was keen to support development projects in Pakistan including Azad Kashmir and Northern Areas, through Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) and would specifically like to cooperate in education, tourism development and environment- related projects.

He said Japanese tourists were enthralled by the natural beauty and serenity of the Northern Areas and he would visit Hunza, Gilgit and other places to explore the sectors where Jica could provide support.

Mr Iqbal, reciprocating his goodwill sentiments, said Pakistan was proud of its friendly relations with Japan and said Jica had made remarkable contribution towards social and environment sector development in Pakistan.

The minister apprised the ambassador of development projects being implemented in Azad Kashmir and Northern Areas.

He stated that the government was focusing towards education, health, power generation, communication and tourism development in these areas.

He said tourism policy with detailed action plan would be ready within 20 days, and Tourism Development Board and Mineral Development Board were also being set up in the Northern Areas.

He said he looked forward to Jica’s assistance and investment in these areas as this would attract greater Japanese tourists, thus enhancing friendly ties between the two countries.
