ISLAMABAD, Aug 10: Stage is set for the election of president, secretary general and other central office-bearers of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML) by the party’s General Council which will meet here on Saturday.

Nomination papers will be filed on Friday, and it will be interesting to see whether former prime minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali dares challenge the sitting secretary general Mushahid Hussain Syed as the former had announced his candidature at a meeting of party elders on Wednesday.

According to party sources, arrangements for the General Council meeting to begin at 1100 hours have been finalised.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the central coordination committee reviewed arrangements made for the general committee and finalised the programme.

Besides the coordination committee, various other committees viz, reception committee, accommodation committee, media committee, venue committee, publicity committee and transport committee have been asked to ensure implementation of the programme.

As many as 1,500 councilors from the four provinces and federal capital will attend the General Council meeting.

Chief Election Commissioner Senator Kamil Ali Agha has announced the schedule of the elections, according to which nomination papers will be received at the PML Central Secretariat from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Friday, and scrutiny will be carried out from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, after which final list of candidates will be displayed at the PML Central Secretariat at 8:00pm.

Balloting will be held on Saturday.
