LONDON: Mr Winston Churchill’s new British Government announced in the King’s Speech “from the throne” today [Nov 6] that Commonwealth Governments would be invited to confer on joint action to remedy the adverse balance of payments. The announcement was made … at the official opening of Parliament. It was read for the King who is convalescing from a lung operation... .

The speech said that while Britain would press on with domestic remedies the Government would also invite other Commonwealth Governments to confer together on joint action to remedy the adverse balance of payments. It forecast legislation ... to annul the nationalisation of steel and to re-organise the industry “under free enterprise with adequate measure of public supervision”.

On foreign affairs, the speech announced that Britain was resolved with the United States, France and Turkey to press forward with their proposals for joint defence in the Middle East. “My Government regard the abrogation by the Egyptian Government of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of alliance of 1936 and the Sudan Condominium agreements of 1899 as ... without validity.”
