CHITRAL: In a significant step towards aligning higher education with emerging global environmental challenges, a proposal to introduce a four-year BS programme in Climate Change and Sustainability was discussed at a high-level academic meeting at the University of Chitral.

The meeting, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Hazirullah, was held in the university’s conference room and reviewed a range of academic, administrative and policy-related matters concerning the institution.

A major highlight was the proposed BS programme in Climate Change and Sustainability, envisioned as a joint initiative of the Departments of Botany and Zoology. According to university officials, the programme aims to strengthen academic learning and research in climate change, environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The meeting also deliberated on improving existing academic structures and facilitating students. Participants reviewed proposed amendments to merit scholarship rules and regulations to ensure transparency, fairness and equitable distribution of financial assistance.

Other matters discussed included the effective utilisation of vacant seats, streamlining student migration procedures, improving credit transfer mechanisms and addressing examination-related issues.

Expanding opportunities in technology education also featured prominently on the agenda. The vice chancellor reviewed proposals to increase the number of seats in the fifth semester of the BS Computer Science programme.

The university is also working to develop institutional policies in line with quality assurance standards prescribed by the National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC), with the aim of ensuring that its computing programmes meet national and international academic benchmarks.

Addressing the meeting, the vice chancellor and members of the academic forum reaffirmed their commitment to improving academic standards and introducing reforms to enhance the quality of higher education.

The university administration reiterated its resolve to expand access to modern educational opportunities and introduce relevant academic programmes aligned with evolving market demands, technological advancements and global standards.

The proposed reforms and new degree programme will be taken forward following the completion of the required statutory approval process.
