KARACHI: Emphasising the need for a comprehensive strategy and effective coordination among all relevant institutions to overcome the energy crisis, protect the environment and ensure sustainable development, Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi on Wednesday called for an end to power theft, the promotion of the blue economy and environmental protection.

Addressing the concluding session of the Sindh Energy and Climate Change Conference as chief guest, he said that alongside solar and wind energy, the potential of thermal energy should also be explored, stressing that promoting alternative energy sources must go hand in hand with eliminating electricity theft.

Mr Hashmi called for identifying the causes of electricity transmission losses and leakages, whether due to inefficiency, theft or other factors, and taking effective measures to address them.

He said that an uninterrupted energy supply was essential for schools, households, hospitals and other necessities. To address the energy crisis, he said, the potential of the blue economy must also be explored.

The governor emphasised the need to focus on seawater desalination, prevention of marine pollution and protection of marine life.

Speaking about climate change, he stressed the importance of coordinated measures for plantation, improvement of the sewage system and control of environmental pollution.

He said protecting the environment from the adverse effects of climate change was essential for creating a healthy environment. He also highlighted the need to prevent mosquito breeding through effective measures.

The governor urged conference participants to submit their recommendations to Governor House, which would be forwarded to the relevant institutions along with proposals from Governor House for further action.
