KARACHI: A man was run over and killed by a fast-moving trailer on Native Jetty Bridge on Wednesday.

Police said the man, identified as Abdul Tawab, 32, was riding a motorbike when the trailer hit him. He sustained critical injuries and was taken to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), where he died during treatment.

Docks police said the driver fled the scene, leaving behind the heavy vehicle, which was impounded.

Meanwhile, a passer-by, Husain Samad, 16, was killed by a hit-and-run-driver on Mauripur Road near Marine Academy. The body was shifted to the CHK.

Suspect shot dead in ‘encounter’

The Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) on Wednesday claimed to have gunned down a suspect in an encounter in the Baghdadi area of Lyari.

A police spokesperson said that acting on a tip-off, an AVLC team signalled a bike-rider to stop. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the suspect, later identified as Aizaz Husain, was arrested in injured condition. He died while being taken to the CHK.

Police claimed the slain suspect was a member of an ‘inter-provincial gang’ and had a criminal record, having been arrested four times.
