ISLAMABAD: Lawmakers on Tuesday urged the government to ensure better salary packages, allied financial benefits, and robust economic protection for mine workers and their families.

Emphasizing the hazardous conditions of the sector, they called for strengthening workplace safety management and ensuring strict compliance with international safety standards.

The legislators stressed that providing necessary protective equipment is vital to prevent recurring accidents and save precious lives in the mining industry. They noted that financial security must go hand in hand with physical protection to secure the welfare of this vulnerable labour segment.

The directives were issued in a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis held in the Parliament House here on Tuesday. Syed Rafiullah MNA chaired the meeting. The Committee had special focus on the hardships and challenges faced by mine workers, who risk their lives every day to earn a livelihood and provide for their families.

Strengthening workplace safety management, ensuring strict compliance with safety standards, and providing necessary protective equipments to prevent accidents and save precious lives, the panel demanded.

The lawmakers also urged implementation of minimum wages of Rs 41000 fixed by the federal government. The Committee emphasized that effective enforcement of officially notified minimum wages be ensured so that mine workers receive their legally entitled remuneration.
