KARACHI: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on Friday claimed to have arrested a man for allegedly depriving a woman of approximately Rs4.45 million by making empty promises of marriage on a matrimonial app.

According to the agency, the suspect, posing as “Hassam Uddin”, allegedly obtained the money through online bank transfers and subsequently threatened the woman to circulate her doctored photographs on social media to extort further money.

He was booked in a case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, it added.

Initial investigations suggest that the suspect may have targeted several other women as well through similar modus operandi, the agency said, urging other victims to come forward and report their complaints, assuring them of complete confidentiality.

The public was advised to exercise caution while using matrimonial apps and social media platforms.

A young man with an alleged criminal record was found shot dead in North Karachi on Friday, police and rescue services officials said.

They said the body, bearing a gunshot wound, was found on the main road near Rehmania Mor in Sector 5B-3.

Khwaja Ajmer Nagri SHO Farrukh Hashmi said the deceased was identified as Sameer Masih, 30, a resident of Taiser Town.

He said initial investigations suggested that the deceased was travelling on a motorcycle as a pillion rider when he fell at the spot, while the other rider escaped. Sameer had a bullet wound to his back and was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The officer said the deceased had a criminal record, with five FIRs registered against him at different police stations.

He said it was possible that Sameer had been shot and wounded by a citizen during an attempted robbery somewhere in Manghopir, after which his accomplice abandoned him at the spot.
