LARKANA: The Awami Tehreek (AT) held a conference and district convention here on Friday as part of its public awareness campaign against what it calls a conspiracy to fragment Sindh, the possible 28th Constitutional Amendment, the seizure of Sindh’s mineral resources and land, and the construction of canals and dams, including the Jalalpur Canal.
The party elected a new district body, with Advocate Zulfiqar Mirani as president and Mustafa Rehman Abro as general secretary.
Addressing the gathering, AT central organiser Lal Jarwar, Mr Mirani, and central leaders Advocate Sajid Hussain Mahesar, Sattar Rind and Kashif Mallah, among others, said the possible 28th Amendment aimed to break up Sindh, erase its national and historical identity, strip the provinces of their powers and seize their resources.
They alleged that Mohsin Naqvi, whom they described as an establishment representative running a campaign to divide Sindh, and Faisal Vawda had been “spewing venom” against the province after being elected senators with the votes of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The speakers said the PPP had “observed a fast of silence” over the two men’s attacks on Sindh’s unity, while the PML-N and PPP governments had “rolled up the carpet of democracy” through “black laws”, amendments and ordinances.
They accused the PPP of betraying the people of Sindh and “auctioning off” the province’s resources for the sake of power. They alleged that the party had accepted the “bogus” results of the digital census, handed Sindh’s land to companies for corporate farming, “sold the Indus River” and secretly assisted the Punjab government in building the Jalalpur Canal.
