KARACHI: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Karachi on Wednesday claimed to have arrested over 40 suspects during a raid on an “illegal call centre” located on Sharea Faisal.
An NCCIA spokesperson said that the call centre was involved in committing fraud against foreigners. “The NCCIA has successfully conducted a raid against a scam centre, located on the fourth floor of Technology Park, Sharea Faisal, Karachi.”
“The scam centre was allegedly involved in defrauding foreign nationals by obtaining their banking information through deceptive calls and subsequently misusing their financial data,” said the NCCIA statement.
During the operation, 47 suspects were arrested, while five suspects remain absconding.
A case has been registered against a total of 52 suspects under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act.
During the search and seizure operation, 50 laptops, 26 mobile phones, one desktop computer, other digital devices, and miscellaneous documents were recovered.
Later, investigating officer Ameer Ali brought the 47 suspects in the spoofing and credit card data theft case before Judicial Magistrate (East) Gulraiz Memon and sought their custody for 14 days for further questioning.
The IO stated in the remand paper that their custody was required for interrogation regarding the modus operandi and to ascertain details of the operational structure, financial channels, and digital infrastructure used in the commission of the offences. After hearing the IO, the court remanded all the suspects in NCCIA custody for three days.
Meanwhile, the same court sent 12 suspects to prison on judicial remand in a case pertaining to creating explicit animations featuring child characters and selling them to foreign clients.
