LONDON: Tabulators began counting what appeared to be a record number of ballots on Thursday night [Oct 25] to see if Britain had rejected the Socialist Party and sent Mr Winston Churchill back to power in the General Election. Counting began immediately after polls closed at 21-00 GMT and first returns were expected to start rolling in about two hours later. Conservatives were heavily favoured to win, thus ending six years of Socialist rule.

From all over the country came the same report “it looks like a record vote”. In many districts more than half the eligible voters had cast verdicts on socialism, war and peace, Mr Churchill and the cost of living by afternoon. Both Conservatives and Labourites claimed the heavy poll had aided their cause. It was a fine day foggy at times and in places but generally bright throughout the country. No incidents were reported.

Prime Minister Attlee, his wife and his daughters Felicity and Alison and his son Martin drove to the polling place nearest to 10, Downing Street at 8-30 to cast their votes. Mr Attlee said: “I never prophesy. I urge everyone to the polls.”
