KARACHI: Prime Minister Khwaja Nazimuddin expressed the hope on Monday [Oct 22] for a new era of peace and friendship between Bharat and Pakistan if the Kashmir dispute is settled.

In an interview … Khwaja Nazimuddin said: “If the Kashmir dispute is settled today, tomorrow we become brothers.” He said that the time has come to put into “practical effect” the de_sires of friendship by settlement of disputes.

But the new Prime Minister made it clear that this new relationship, if it evolves, can only be possible through settlement of the Kashmir dispute by means of a free and impartial plebiscite within the princely state. — News agencies

Landslides and broken dams paralyzed transport and communications along a 200-mile stretch of east coast. At least 118 persons were killed, according to the first reports, 100 of them in Hualien county and 18 in a coal mine explosion believed to have been caused by one of the first earthquakes. Government officials feared the final toll may exceed 1,000.
