SORTING WASTE

SORTING WASTE: The way household trash is collected in Pakistan makes it difficult to recycle useful materials and to manage waste properly. In many countries, separate bins are provided for food waste, recyclable materials such as plastic, paper and glass, and general waste. Pakistan can gradually introduce a similar system in residential areas, schools, universities and markets. However, providing separate bins alone will not be enough. Waste collection should also be organised according to these categories, and there should be mass public awareness campaigns. The authorities concerned should introduce waste seg-regation at source as part of a proper waste management system. This could reduce the amount of waste reaching landfills.

BASIC HEALTH UNIT: The condition of the basic health unit (BHU) serving the people of Balgatar in Turbat deserves attention. An audit report identified issues related to medicine procurement and record-keeping in the provincial health system. The report also recorded irregu-larities involving flood-relief health expenditure and monitoring. Such findings underline the importance of strong over-sight of medicines and health facilities. The provincial health authorities should inspect the Balgatar BHU, and verify staff attendance, availability of essential medicines, condition of equipment, cleanliness, functionality of maternity and laboratory services, and the overall status of patient care at the said BHU.

RECKLESS DRIVERS: Every signal-free road that promises ease brings another problem. Reckless driving by the locals, especially wrong-side driving, creates chaos. Motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers go for shortcuts without realising how hazardous it can be. Bikers can be seen performing dangerous stunts as well. At night, low visibility on the roads makes things much worse for the drivers. Traffic wardens should impose heavy fines on all those indulging in illegal activities.
