GUJRAT: A bride was shot dead on the day of her walima reception in Gujranwala city, allegedly by a youth whose marriage proposal was declined by her family.
Police sources say that Saba Tufail, a resident of New Gulshan Colony, was married to Sufian, also of Gujranwala, on Friday last. The couple’s walima reception was held at a banquet hall in Shalimar Town on the GT Road on Saturday.
The sources say that as the couple was returning home from the venue in a car, two men riding a motorbike intercepted the vehicle near Chungi No 10.
As soon as the driver stopped the car, one of the suspects, Sarfraz, forcibly entered the vehicle and fired a bullet with a pistol, which pierced through Saba’s chest, leaving her critically injured. The suspects then fled the scene on the bike.
The injured woman was shifted to the Gujranwala Teaching Hospital in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her bullet wound during treatment.
On being informed of the incident, teams of police and the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) reached the spot and collected the evidence from the crime scene.
The doctors later conducted an autopsy and handed over the body to the deceased woman’s family.
Gujranwala Crime Control Department (CCD) has registered the case against three suspects –Sarfraz, his female cousin Aroob of Wazirabad city and his unidentified accomplice under sections 302, 311, 109 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the report of Ijaz Ahmed, the victim’s brother and started the investigation.
As per the sources, the initial investigation revealed that Saba was a friend of Aroob and both worked in a factory and would often visit each other’s houses.
Sarfraz had met Saba at Aroob’s house and started liking her. He then sent a marriage proposal to Saba’s parents, but it was declined. Since then, Sarfraz had been holding a grudge against Saba and her family.
