DADU: Senator Farooq H. Naek, who heads the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice, has said that law must apply equally to the powerful and the weak. Access to justice must not depend on a citizen’s social status, political affiliation or financial strength, he said.

Mr Naek was speaking at a ceremony held on Saturday to mark the 51st death anniversary of Pir Illahi Bax, a former chief minister of Sindh, at Dadu’s law college named after him.

“Constitution’s supremacy, rule of law and equal justice for all citizens are fundamental principles of a democratic system,” said Mr Naek, and impressed upon lawyers to defend their clients’ rights while respecting courts, adhering to professional ethics and remaining faithful to the Constitution.

Paying tribute to Pir Illahi Bux for his contributions to education, politics and public service, he said the legacy of Illahi Bux continued to inspire generations in Sindh, where he established educational institutions and improved public welfare.

Senator Naek said promotion of education was one of Pir Illahi Bux’s most enduring contributions to Sindh, recalling that he promoted elementary education and encouraged adult and women’s education. He also played an active role in the establishment of the University of Sindh and supported efforts for the establishment of the Dow Medical College and S.M. Law College.

Senator Naek appreciated the efforts of Illahi Bux’s grandson, Pir Mazharul Haq — a senior Supreme Court lawyer and a former senior minister — to carry forward his grandfather’s educational and public service legacy. He also acknowledged Barrister Pir Mujeebul Haq’s association with educational and legal institutions.

Addressing the ceremony, retired Justice Abdul Rasool Memon said that the services rendered by Pir Illahi Bux and his family are numerous and highly commendable.

He described Pir Illahi Bux as a hero of Sindh who established outstanding institutions across the province during his tenure as minister.

Besides Pir Mazharul Haq and Pir Mujeebul Haq, the ceremony was attended by Dadu’s District & Sessions Judge Zahid Hussain Maitlo, Deputy Commissioner Syed Murtaza Ali Shah and a large number of other distinguished personalities.
