PESHAWAR: Medical teaching institution, the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology, hosted the fourth national conference, “Echo Pakistan 2026”, bringing together cardiologists and cardiac imaging experts from across the country to discuss the latest advances in cardiac diagnosis and treatment.

The event held under the theme “From Prevention to Intervention”, the conference focused on early diagnosis, modern treatment techniques and professional skills development to benefit more patients without complications, a press release said.

Patron-in-Chief Prof Shahkar Ahmad Shah, Dean and Chief Executive of PIC-MTI, welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of modern medical knowledge and accurate diagnosis in improving patient care.

Prof Shahkar, a cardio-thoracic surgeon by profession, said that on the recommendation by the local auditors, the Geneva-based ISO has certified the institute.

The ISO was the world’s largest standardisation company for industries and institutions including healthcare. It has issued ISO certificates to private sector hospitals in the country including Aga Khan University Hospital, Shifa Hospital and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre.

The PIC management has put in place stringent quality control measures in delivery of patient care and maintenance of hospital facilities and equipment, he said.

The PIC, he said, had also got the Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation in March 2023 to become the only public sector hospital in the country to be JCI-accredited. The credit of the achievements of the PIC went to its staff as well as the government for its support.

“Not only, do we provide quality care at the PIC but we are in a process to extend the facilities to other districts in the near future due to the increasing number of heart ailments in the province,” he said.

Conference convener Dr Abidullah, Head of Cardiology at PIC-MTI, emphasised the importance of advanced cardiac imaging and practical training in improving healthcare standards. The conference featured sessions on advanced echo cardiography, paediatric cardiology, modern treatment approaches and Basic Life Support (BLS), along with hands-on workshops to enhance clinical skills.
