ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Canada have made significant progress in finalising the ‘Bilateral Investment Treaty’, as the two countries concluded the third round of negotiations on Saturday.

The successful conclusion of the third round reflects both countries’ continued commitment to advancing negotiations on the Bilateral Investment Treaty and strengthening the foundation for long-term investment partnerships, a statement issued by the Board of Investment at the end of the negotiations said.

The proposed treaty is expected to contribute to greater investor confidence, enhanced economic engagement and expand opportunities for businesses in both countries, the official statement said.

Ms Daphnee Campeau, senior trade policy officer in Global Affairs Canada’s Investment and Government Procurement Division, led Canada’s delegation at the negotiations. Additional Secretary Khashih ur Rehman of Pakistan’s Ministry of Law and Justice led Pakistan’s delegation.

The two sides held positive, productive discussions on several key issues. Discussions included direct and indirect investments, portfolio investments, Performance Requirements, expropriation, third-party funding, and investor-state dispute settlement.

Minister for Board of Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh and Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Tariq Ali Khan, attended the ceremony that marked the conclusion of the third round of negotiations and appreciated the efforts of their respective teams in advancing discussions on the proposed treaty.

The Canadian High Commissioner appreciated the constructive engagement and dedicated efforts of both negotiating teams, and emphasised the importance of continued cooperation in developing a balanced agreement that would facilitate investment, strengthen business confidence and promote mutually beneficial economic ties between Pakistan and Canada.
