KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday inaugurated the Shaheed Captain Karnal Sher Khan Sports Ground and Family Park in Manghopir Town.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Wahab said the project was an important step towards promoting sports in District West. Providing young people with quality sports facilities was among the top priorities of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), he said, adding that the project had been completed at a total cost of Rs217,893,855.
He said the sports ground covered an area of 14,730 square yards and offered separate facilities for football and cricket. The project also included an eight-foot-wide jogging track, plantation, reconstruction of the boundary wall and main gate, and parking facilities.
He said the family park had been developed over approximately 2,705 square yards and featured a jogging track, green spaces, a gazebo, seating benches and a dedicated children’s play area. Streetlights and park lights had also been installed as part of the project.
The mayor added that a pavilion with a seating capacity of 300 to 350 people had been constructed in the sports complex. Indoor sports facilities and a digital library had also been provided.
Mayor Wahab said the impression that no development work was taking place in Karachi was incorrect. Development projects were progressing under the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party, and Karachi would continue to advance under the leadership of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.
He said the site had previously been in a neglected condition, with garbage, encroachments and mud, while young people lacked adequate sports facilities. The completion of the modern sports ground and family park had fulfilled the commitment made to the people of the area.
He said the improvement and construction of the road connecting Manghopir with District Central was another step towards better connectivity. The road would improve links with New Karachi, North Karachi and other areas.
Regarding water supply, Barrister Murtaza Wahab said pumps being imported from Japan for the Hub Pumping Station were expected to arrive in Karachi within the next two to two-and-a-half months. Their installation would help improve water supply to Manghopir, New Karachi, Baldia Town and adjoining areas.
